I am wanting to dress up as a geisha for halloween and I want to know what is the best makeup out there. It will be a long night and so I don't want it to end up cracking or fading where then I will have to keep touching up through out the night. ThanksWhat is the best face makeup for a geisha ?
Well, if you wanted to be 100% authentic, your best bet would be actual geisha makeup (oshiroi), which can be bought as a set (includes setting oil, white base, lip color, eye liner, brushes...possibly a couple of other things) through Hannari-ya. After all, actual geisha and maiko also have to worry about their makeup not cracking and flaking through long nights of work, and this stuff just doesn't do that (it doesn't even to seem to run with sweating!). Unfortunately, real oshiroi is insanely expensive, so unless you're really obsessed with authenticity or you plan on making a regular thing out of your costume it's probably not worth your money.

The folks there are pretty picky about getting their makeup as authentic as possible, so their suggestions are bound to be pretty good. I noticed someone mentioned MAC cosmetics part-way through the thread. Just remember that for geisha makeup, your face (and neck and shoulders, if you're doing this the authentic way) should look smooth and matte, not wet, oily, or otherwise shiny.

Scroll down a little and you should see two drawings of geisha and maiko faces. Again, if you want to be reasonably authentic in your makeup, follow those little drawings. They give you a much better idea of what real geisha makeup looks like than anything that comes on the ';geisha girl'; makeup kits that appear every Halloween. What is the best face makeup for a geisha ?
