Primer: goes on under foundation to set the foundation and make it last longer. Concealer: waterproof concealer can go over an under foundation. Loose powder gets dusted over foundation to seal it in. Pressed powder is for touch ups on the go. Powder foundation is really just powder with more coverage than a normal pressed powder. Liquid foundation comes in varying types of coverage: sheer, translucent and full (different brands will say it differently) but sheer is just a slight covering which sets the canvas and will even out the skin a bit, translucent provides a little coverage for evening out the skin and camoflauging some blemishes however light will pass through it so it still looks natural, full coverage will cover everything and will look less natural.
For a lightweight natural look: you should start with a clear primer on top of your moisturizer. Laura Mercier and Smashbox make good ones. Over that you should try a translucent foundation. It's best to try them out yourself. Estee Lauder makes some good ones as well as Prescriptives. Then use some concealer to cover up blemishes. For serious ones, try using a green hued one under a normal one (green counteracts red). Then over it all, dust translucent powder.
Your skin regimen should change slightly in the winter to account for the dry air. You should use a more intense moisturizer.

I say stay away from this stuff altogether.

Try to make your skin healthy, rather than covering up it's unhealthiness.
Drink lots and lots of water, eat right, stay fit, exfoliate, and moisturize.
That's what I do, and I never have to wear any face makeup.
A good, well trained skin care and skin color consultant will help you with all these questions; will let you try before you buy. And the best skin care and color companies will exchange their own products for different ones. This is all because the best companies are actually doing the best (medical science based) research and development, plus updating the training of their consultants and managers all the time- it matters at least as much to them as it does to their products' loyal customers.
Find a trained consultant who is physically located near you. Sounds like you need some advice for prepping the palette too. As I think you realize already, skin changes with climate changes, with good or not so good regimen of care, with the use of products appropriate/inappropriate to your individual face's needs. One size does not fit all. That girl in the drug store may or may not have excellent training, may or may not be there the next time you visit the store. Ask her.
concealor is used to cover up all the small things like acne and blackheads
liquid foundation and powder foundation r similar but powder foudation is way easier foundation makes u look like u have a more even skin color but it still covers up like concealor does

1.conealer-covering flaws=blemishes, dark undereye cirles, puffiness
2.Liquid foundation-for normal/dry skin types. or specially designed for combination skin. its for evening out your skintone creating a base for your makeup, it goes on right after moisturizer bfore any other makeup(exception-mascara)
3.Loose powder-is if you don't want that heavy, caked on look. loose powder is lighter, more natural, doesn't feel suffocating and keeps your foundation in place
4.Powder foundation- for oily/combination skin. its to keep your skin looking matte. sometimes isn't even coverage.
5.Pressed powder- for on-the-go. if your getting shiny while your in the car or just out of your house than u keep a compact pressed powder to keep shine at bay
6.primer-u don't need
7.translucent powder- good if your cant figure out your skintone. translucent means you can see your skin and skin color through it.
You need a foundation specially made for evening out skintone. concealer for covering flaws like acne marks. if you dont want cakey i suggest using a liquid foundation with a loose powder. for cold weather you dont want that fake tan look so keep it natural. rosy pink cheeks r in for winter. you could go heavier in winter than lighter and more sheer in summer.
